Majd Kamalmaz

Through psycho-social programs for human development, the foundation helps people rediscover themselves and regain the strength to rebuild their lives.

Majd

Majd Kamalmaz was a psychotherapist and humanitarian. He was born in Damascus and moved to the United States as a child, where he spent most of his life.

He was a son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.

His work

Majd specialized in trauma therapy and spent much of his career treating people in the aftermath of war and natural disaster. He founded the International Institute for Psychosocial Development to bring that care to Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

  • Louisiana with survivors of Hurricane Katrina
  • Indonesia after the tsunami
  • Bosnia and Kosovo with women who survived wartime violence and children orphaned by war, helping them heal from trauma without medication
  • Lebanon two centers for Syrian refugees, open to all ages and backgrounds

In memory

In February 2017 Majd traveled to Syria to visit family and was detained at a checkpoint in Damascus. In 2024 the United States government confirmed that he had died in detention.
